Creativity and New Media

I took an article title quote from a new media source that struck out to me, and gave it a little spin using my art skills.

Blog: Creativity

New media allows different users to market their creations on a grander scale, compared to traditional media. As reported by The New Yorker, the best-known mashup, "The Grey Album", was only possible due to new media. The mashup is a combination of vocals from Jay-Z's "The Black Album" and a reorganized version of the Beatles' "The White Album". New media has allowed new creativity such as "The Grey Album" flourish, which wouldn't be possible under old media. New media allows more freedom for creativity without having to worry about the traditional boundaries under old media.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are created with the booming technology invented today. Games are one of hte more popular forms of virtual words; however, virtual worlds that exist for the purpose of rehabilitation purposes, business purposes, etc. are being invented as well. Minecraft, an immensely popular game is a virtual version of Legos. Children are very creative with the game, building structures designed with imagination. This creativity can be particularly useful when the children grows up, with creativity evolving into engineering.

Virtual worlds, as argued by Forbes editor Diane Mehta, can allow people to be more truly connected, compared to outside of the virtual world. People can be easily isolated in today's world and virtual worlds allow people to be "isolated together". On the other hand, virtual worlds still not "real", which can take away the user's actual experience in the "real" world. It can become a cycle of disconnect from reality leads to increase usage of virtual world which leads to even more disconnect from reality.

Virtual worlds probably won't be called virtual any longer. Virtual and reality may become so similar that one can't really tell the difference between the two. There will probably be a new term for a "virtual world". But, with the new technology, it can be certain that the way people see reality will be very different...The virtual world moves into the classroom Posted by Joe Earle | Sep 14, 2018 https://www.reporternewspapers.net/2018/09/14/the-virtual-world-moves-into-the-classroom/

Blog About Twitter

Compared to a Blackboard discussion, Twitter is significantly limited in characters, whereas Blackboard has unlimited character input. As such, the author of the post have to be a lot more succinct in getting his/her point across in Twitter, and not use flowery languages.

In an in-class discussion, it's a lot quicker and real compared to a Twitter blog. Immediately, a person listening to an in-class discussion can ask follow up questions or be able to identify parts where an argument doesn't make sense through the speaker's words and posture. In a Twitter blog, a person can remain anonymous and the source of the information can be untraceable.

Blog: Social Networking Sites

Facebook v. Twitter v. Instagram v. Snapchat

Facebook is the oldest social networking site out of the four, with Facebook owning Instagram. Facebook is typically more bland with a navy blue and gray background. Twitter, Instagram, and Snapchat has a more vibrant background; Twitter has a clean white and sky blue color scheme, Instagram has a clean white background with cute fonts, and Snapchat is known by its goofy ghost logo on a yellow square.

Facebook is typically used by the older generations which the others are used by the younger generations, millennials and younger. The sites besides Facebook, also has a more basic interface that is more easily navigated.

Social Networking

Social networking is a new media that's relatively young compared to old media. In recent years, social networking is used as a major marketing platform that surpasses traditional marketing. Consumers are reached directly and instantaneously if done properly. Celebrities such as Beyonce declared her pregnancy on Instagram rather than through a magazine, and they can market their day-to-day life better through social media. Through these methods, the advertising is more intimate to the user, which is beneficial for marketers trying to persuade consumers to purchase a product or service. In addition, with social networks such as LinkedIn, users can post their resume for all to see and get recruited by recruiters.

Though, there are always pros and cons to everything, including social media. Social media posts can lead to bots stealing your information for malicious use, user data can be stolen, and the platform users aren't always the most brilliant. As we saw in the past, Uber disabled price surge charge during an immigration protest. But due to misunderstanding with the wording, users thought Uber was against the protest and started the #DeleteUber movement. The negative publicity impacted Uber. Still, people continue to use social media as it grows. In China, everything is connected to their social media platform, WeChat. It's how people pay, obtain a loan, get a job, etc. As social media evolve, it may become a crucial source of living for people, for the better or worse. People's worth may be decided on their social media, setting the stage for a dark dystopian future described in Black Mirror's Nosedive episode...

Blog v Wiki

Essentially, blogs and wikis are a way for users to share information. Wikis are edited by numerous people who have access, and blogs are typically only edited by one individual.

Blogs can be used for collaboration when an individual is trying to provide information to its readers as seen in the NYT article with Wal-Mart Tastemakers. The blog writers are blunt in its criticism of products that Wal-Mart carries.

The usage of wiki is always evolving. As of now, it is used almost like an encyclopedia online to share information, that is not necessarily always accurate. As for a new use for wikis, I can't think of one right now.
